Cultivating Fig Saplings

Figs can be propagated through several means. The 5 ways that are adopted include:

  1. By cutting
  2. Air layering
  3. Grafting
  4. Micro propagation
  5. Seed

At Figara11, the method used for propagation is by cutting. Not only they are less tedious, it ensures that the figs variety is cloned and only the plants that exhibit better qualities are propagated. This follows the principle of genetic culling. Culling process can help prevent cultivation setbacks associated with diseases and genetic drift.

The suitable soil medium for fig sapling is sandy clay loam. Soil pH should be neutral to alkaline. Figara11 selects cutting from matured trees that are usually at least 11 to 13 feet tall. The trick to selecting the cutting is to find one that is around 1 cm in diameter and fully browned.

The cutting will then be treated with anti-fungal solutions and root inducers. Place the cutting in the soil medium and place it at a shady well ventilated area. Sprouts will come out usually within 1 to 3 weeks.

Upon it growing up to 1 feet to 1.5 feet, transplant to a bigger pot/polybag. Suggest to only put it into ground after 2 feet.

Growth stage of the sapling, focus on giving more nitrogen-based fertilisers to ensure healthy growth of new shoots.
